At its core, WordPress is a blogging platform, making it the premier Content Management System (CMS) for posting blogs. It comes with several tools built in to make content creators lives easier. Here’s a few tips for writing better blogs in WordPress.
1. Don’t Copy And Paste
This doesn’t mean you can’t copy and paste your blog from somewhere else, just make sure you use the Paste As Text icon in the toolbar before you do so, or paste in the Text tab. When you copy and paste from programs like Google Docs and Gmail, there’s going to be lots of added junk like spans that clunk up your code and make it harder for google bots to understand and sometimes can even change the design of the site.
2. Use Headers
Not only is this helpful for google bots to understand what the content is about, it’s a better user experience. People scan blogs when they are looking for specific things and if it’s just paragraph after paragraph, they’re bound to leave and go somewhere else. Plan your blog like you’re writing an outline for a paper back in school. Headers are descriptions about what the following content is all about. Don’t neglect this.
3. Add Images
Remember the old phrase, a picture is worth a thousand words? It’s true and people like looking at images way more than they do reading paragraph after paragraph. Make your blog more interesting and help break up the content when needed by adding relevant images.
4. Image Alt Text
While you’re adding images, an important thing to remember is to always fill in the alt text. Alt Text tells google bots and screen readers what the image is and helps those with disabilities understand the content of your page and helps you rank better in Google Search Results.
5. Don’t Go Crazy with Categories and/or Tags
If your WordPress theme makes use of category and/or tags, it’s a great idea to use them, but don’t go overboard. Tagging a post as a ton of things or making new tags every time you have a post doesn’t help users or bots understand what your content is all about. Use them for what they were intended, to organize your content. Don’t force them on your posts if the content really doesn’t make sense for it. Be strategic about your categories, the fewer and more relevant they are, the better it is for sorting your content and users will be able to find the things they want more easily.
6. Make Use Of The Toolbar
Things like Numbered Lists, Unordered Lists, Blockquotes and Horizontal Rules are useful semantic options that WordPress makes super simple to add to your blog. Don’t force them on things that don’t make sense. They are not intended to be styles, they are semantic tools for bots and screen readers to better understand the content of the page.
7. Make External Links Open In A New Window
Links to other websites on the web are a great idea and should always be included on blog posts, just make sure you check the little box “Open In A New Window” when you do. You want to keep your users on your website and you want them to be able to easily find their way back to your website. Internal links to other pages or posts on your website don’t need this, but if you’re linking to another website, ALWAYS make them open in a new window.
